Technical Details
GE Aerospace has found a way to significantly reduce the time it takes to create advanced aircraft engines: engineers have used AI to reduce the design time of a hyperersonic engine from months to seconds. This refers to the preliminary design of a hypersonic ramjet engine, one of the most complex types of aircraft engines.
Background and Context
Typically, creating a basic design for such an engine requires weeks or even months of calculations and modeling, but the new AI tool can generate working designs almost instantly. According to the company, the AI analyzes multiple flight scenarios, operating modes, and operating conditions, and then generates hundreds of design options in one session.
Industry Impact
The first generated project was able to pass the safety check for key flight requirements. GE Aerospace believes that such technologies can radically accelerate the development of aircraft engines - from early design to full-scale testing and production. The company is already planning to apply this system in civil aviation, in particular, to use AI in the CFM International RISE program to create more efficient and environmentally friendly next-generation engines with open fans.
