Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis explained why he thinks the AI singularity — a crucial turning point in AI development — is already near. The singularity is near due to the emergence of powerful AI agents, Hassabis said in an interview with Axios co-founder Mike Allen on Wednesday at the Google I/O developer conference.

As an example, Hassabis said he uses AI to create mini video games in the evenings — a task that would have taken many months to complete in the past. «This year, with the systems we're all seeing and using, I think we're starting to feel it», he said.

Hassabis added that he believes artificial general intelligence (AGI), when machines will be roughly as intelligent as humans, will emerge by 2030.
