Bungie's Current Situation
Bungie, a US-based studio owned by Sony, has announced that it will end active development of the free-to-play online shooter Destiny 2. The game's last content update is scheduled for June 9.
Reasons and Consequences
According to Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, Bungie leaders discussed ways to make Destiny 2 more appealing to new players but decided to end development and reallocate resources to Marathon. The sci-fi extraction shooter, released in March, failed to meet Sony's sales expectations (1.2 million copies sold in three weeks), but the Japanese platform holder hopes to grow the game's audience over time.
Bungie's Future Plans
Meanwhile, there is no work for the Destiny 2 team at Bungie — some employees have already been transferred to Marathon, while a 'significant portion' (the exact number is not specified) are expected to be laid off. Bungie does not currently plan to start working on Destiny 3. The studio is conducting preparatory work on several games (including those in the Destiny franchise), but none have been approved yet.
