Chinese Scientists Create Solar Panels with 33% Efficiency Record

TL;DR

  • 33% efficiency (vs. 20–24% in traditional panels)
  • Solved perovskite coating uniformity issue
  • Industrial line compatibility without factory overhauls

Why it matters

This breakthrough could revolutionize solar energy by generating more power from smaller areas and reducing production costs.

Technical Details

Scientists from the Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology and Engineering (NIMTE), Suzhou and Taizhou Universities, and S.C Exact Equipment Co. developed tandem solar cells combining silicon and perovskite. The 33% efficiency record was achieved through 'selective passivation' — applying aluminum oxide only to the peaks of silicon pyramids. This eliminated current leakage and improved battery stability.

Context and Background

Conventional solar panels have 20–23% efficiency, with top commercial solutions reaching 24%. Tandem cells, which pair silicon with perovskite, are considered the future of solar energy as they can generate more power without increasing panel size. However, uneven perovskite application on textured silicon surfaces remained a challenge.

Industry Impact

The technology is compatible with existing production lines, making it scalable. After 1,000 hours of testing, the panels retained 90% efficiency. This paves the way for mass production of more efficient solar panels capable of generating more energy at the same size.
