Technical Details

Dell Technologies announced high-performance storage systems of the new generation PowerStore Elite, belonging to the All-Flash class. The devices are built on the Intel hardware platform, and the PowerStoreOS 5.0 is used in the software part. The PowerStore 1500, 5500, and 9500 models debuted. All of them are made in the 3U form factor with two controllers.

Context and Background

The PowerStore 1500 model comes with one 24-core Xeon (1.9 GHz) and 512 GB of DDR5 (per controller). It supports up to 24 NVMe storage devices EDSFF E3.S (in the future - E3.L). In the case of PowerStore 5500, two Xeon chips with 24 cores (1.8 GHz) and 1 GB of RAM per controller are used, and the number of supported E3.S reaches 40. The PowerStore 9500 modification is equipped with two Xeon processors with 32 cores (2.2 GHz) and 2 GB of RAM per controller; it supports 40 storage devices.

Industry Impact

All new products allow the use of TLC-type SSDs with a capacity of up to 15.36 TB and QLC with a capacity of up to 30.72 TB. Expansion shelves that support up to 44 EDSFF storage devices can be connected. The maximum total capacity is 5.8 PB. The junior version uses a 100GbE RDMA interconnect, the other two - 200GbE RDMA.
