Europeans accuse Google, Meta, and TikTok of failing to combat scams

TL;DR

  • European Consumer Organization files complaints against Google, Meta, and TikTok
  • Companies accused of failing to protect users from financial scams

Why it matters

This move reflects growing pressure worldwide on large tech organizations due to the negative impact of social media, especially on children.

European Consumer Organization Accuses Google, Meta, and TikTok

The European Consumer Organization (BEUC) has filed complaints against Google, Meta, and TikTok, accusing the companies of failing to protect users from financial scams on their platforms.

Details of the Accusations

According to consumer advocates, between December and March, they reported nearly 900 ads that violated EU laws, but the platforms only removed 27% of the ads, and 52% of the reports were rejected or ignored.

Company Reactions

Google and Meta have disputed the complaints, assuring users that they are taking preventive measures to protect users. TikTok has declined to comment.

Digital Services Act

The complaints filed by BEUC and its 29 members from 27 European countries were directed to the European Commission and national regulators in accordance with the Digital Services Act (DSA), which requires large online platforms to take additional measures to combat illegal and harmful content.

Fines

Fines under the DSA can reach 6% of a company's annual global turnover.
