Micron to quadruple DDR4 production

TL;DR

  • Micron expands DDR4 production
  • Virginia facility to increase DDR4 output four times
  • Micron invests $2 billion in production expansion

Why it matters

The increased production will help alleviate the current DDR4 memory shortage.

Technical details

Micron Technology has announced plans to expand its Virginia facility to increase DDR4 production fourfold. This decision comes amid an ongoing memory shortage.

Context and background

Micron had previously decided to cease large-scale production of DDR4 and LPDDR4, shipping the last batches to customers in consumer and server segments. However, due to high demand for DDR4 from defense systems, automotive and medical equipment, industrial and telecommunications equipment, and aerospace manufacturers, the company has decided to modernize one of its American facilities.

Industry impact

Micron is investing $2 billion in the expansion, of which $275 million comes from funds received from the US government under the so-called 'Chip Act'. The new lines in Virginia will be able to meet DDR4 and LPDDR4 demand from the American market. The 1α process technology implemented at Micron's Virginia facility allows for a 40% increase in transistor density compared to 1z.
