Technical Details
Moscow's transport authority announced plans to implement NFC-based payments for the virtual Troika card. The system will work with Android smartphones, enabling users to pay for transit by tapping their phones on validators or turnstiles. Users will need to open the Metro Moscow app, select the virtual card, and touch the device to the payment terminal.
Context and Background
The virtual Troika service, launched in 2024, currently supports QR code payments across Moscow's metro, buses, trams, and other public transport. Available on Android and iOS, the service is built entirely on Russian technology. NFC payments will be added as an additional option while retaining QR code functionality.
Industry Impact
The project is being developed by Moscow's Center for Prospective Developments, part of the city's first ticketing system laboratory. This initiative represents a significant step toward digitalizing urban transport and strengthening domestic capabilities in financial technology.
