The first Bitcoin purchase
Today marks 16 years since the first purchase with Bitcoin in history — two pizzas cost 10,000 coins. At today's exchange rate, that's worth $770 million.
The deal
On May 22, 2010, American programmer Laszlo Hanyecz announced on the Bitcointalk forum that he was willing to send 10,000 Bitcoins to anyone who ordered him two pizzas. A student named Jeremy Sturdivant responded and paid $40 for two mushroom pizzas from Papa John's.
Significance
This is considered the first purchase of a real item with Bitcoins. The cryptocurrency community celebrates May 22 as Bitcoin Pizza Day.

At today's exchange rate, 10,000 Bitcoins are worth around $770 million; the transaction fee at the time was 0.99 Bitcoins — now worth around $77,000.
