Toyota in Taiwan

TL;DR

  • Toyota starts producing cars in Taiwan
  • Export to Japan begins in October

Why it matters

This is the first time Toyota has implemented its own foreign production line for its main models

Technical Details

Toyota will start producing its main passenger cars for the Japanese market in Taiwan, creating its own production line there. Exports to Japan will begin in October. This is the first time Toyota has implemented its own foreign production line for its main models, with supplies being shipped back to Japan. The new models produced in Taiwan are the Noah and Voxy models. Both models are sold annually in Japan in quantities of 70,000 to 80,000 units and are Toyota's main models.

Background and Context

Currently, there is a serious shortage of supplies, with delivery times sometimes exceeding a year, and there have even been cases of order cancellations. Toyota hopes to alleviate the pressure on supplies through reverse imports. Toyota will build a production line for the Japanese market at its joint venture in northern Taiwan through new investments and the modernization of existing equipment, with an annual production capacity of around 100,000 vehicles, mainly low-cost models.

Industry Impact

The company's president describes the supply constraints as an 'abnormal situation, a crisis situation', expressing concerns that continued delays in supplies will lead to customers switching to other automakers. Previously, Honda became the first Japanese automaker to apply 'reverse imports' of electric vehicles.
